Before Brennan and I were married we talked about how we would prioritize Bible study together. We would do devotionals, and study books together every night.
Well, you can probably guess how that went…. Life got busy, Netflix came out with a new eye-catching series, and quite frankly, that couples devotionals we tried left us feeling bored and sleepy.
We found that most of the discussion in the couples bible studies that was laid out for us was not helpful to us, the questions had obvious answers that failed to lead to more discussion on our part.
So, we decided to go back to the core concept and content of a bible study- THE BIBLE.
I had been given a Women’s CSB Bible and fell in love with the commentary. I felt as if the stories jumped off the page because I had commentary that was INTRIGUING to me, as a woman. Here’s the link: The CSB Study Bible For Women
I looked online and found the same translation in a more masculine form. I gifted this to Brennan, and he loves how the commentary in this Bible really lends to his interests, as a man. Here’s the link: CSB Study Bible, Hardcover
Together we have found that reading through books of the Bible out loud together in Bibles of the same translation, keeps us focused on the reading because all of the words are the same, yet we can discuss the different commentary our Bibles have with each other. We’ve learned that discussing the very things that stand out to us and are intriguing to us (and not what someone else wants us to discuss) has lead us to a much deeper understanding of the Bible and of each other.
If you are looking to make bible study with your spouse a priority, I would start with the Bible. Going back to the roots, and allowing God to speak to you through His written word will be more of a blessing to you and your marriage than any other book written, I promise you that.
