The Bachelor, it is like a totally horrifying train wreck! It has the ability to completely annoy me yet, suck me in at the same time. It is so painful, yet I CAN’T LOOK AWAY! It is 100% my guilty pleasure. Every season I say I’m not going to watch, and then I lose all self control and end up diving in head first after the first episode…
I find myself complaining about it the whole entire time I’m watching it… Now that we are getting to the end of the season, I can’t help but get annoyed by the seemingly blind love at this stage of their relationship…
They’ve known each other for possibly 4 week, spent 8 hours alone together(6 of those kissing) and every second of that on camera. There is no way they know anything beneath surface level about each other, yet they know that they are in love. And ‘they’ve had struggles and learned to work through things together,’ (….like jumping off a cliff in paradise.) But that really shows that they can overcome any obstacle in their relationship in the future…
While these nauseating whirlwind love affairs seem so far removed from our reality, I can’t help but see a bit of a resemblance to a relationship we have with someone….
God.
We say we know God, but do we REALLY know Him? Or have we just spent a couple dates getting to know Him? We’ve sat down and read some verses out of our Bible here and there, maybe even a couple chapters… We’ve googled bible topics to fit with our current situation. We’ve listened to the sermons in Sundays.. And we can surely answer with a “ALL THE TIME ” whenever we hear the prompting “GOD IS GOOD.”
But are we just like those silly girls on The Bachelor? Are we just professing our love for someone we don’t even truly know?
We know He is God, and we know all the Bible stories. But are they just stories we’ve been told? Or have we read them and experienced them through the work of the Holy Spirit ourselves?
If the answer is no, lets put the work in that EVERY RELATIONSHIP requires to flourish. Let’s take the time to learn about The Man we profess our love for. Let’s listen to what He has to say, and let’s tell him about ourselves; our secrets, dreams, worries, and joys.
Just like on The Bachelor, falling in love with someone you don’t know isn’t reality. But, fortunately we don’t have to compete for His love.
He has already given us the final rose, and we can be assured that he will pick us everyday for the rest of our lives. So let’s get to know Him more and more each and every day. The Bible isn’t just a book about theology, it’s not a book of stories, or feel good one-liners; it’s a book ABOUT GOD.
So dive in, and be ready to fall MADLY and DEEPLY in love with the Creator of the Universe. ❤️❤️
